Cholesterol is a naturally produced substance in the body but when you have excess amounts of it due to the food you eat, you could suffer from high cholesterol effects. As a matter of fact, your body already produces enough cholesterol as it is, so there is absolutely no need for you to supplement it by eating burgers and fries. The problem is that a lot of the food that people eat is rich in cholesterol. So what happens when a person has high levels of cholesterol in his system?

Identifying the Effects of High Cholesterol

The effects of high cholesterol are not quite noticeable because they occur inside, mostly in the walls of the artery. You could be a walking tank overloaded with the waxy substance in your body and never even feel it. A person could feel alive and healthy and all of a sudden, suffer from a heart attack.

Plaque Buildup and Its Effects

Plaque buildup is one of the main effects of high cholesterol. When the substance becomes too much for the body to use properly, the excess gets dumped into the blood. There, the cholesterol clings to the walls of the arteries and eventually hardens into plaque. This can lead to several health problems, and most of them are life-threatening:

  1. High blood pressure
  2. Heart attacks
  3. Stroke
  4. Coronary heart diseases
  5. Atherosclerosis
  6. Angina

Atherosclerosis is a condition where the arteries harden and become thinner. This will coincide with other complications like high blood pressure and could eventually lead to heart attack. Angina, on the other hand, is a condition where a person starts feeling constant chest pains because there is a shortage of blood and oxygen in the heart and its surrounding areas. Stroke is becoming very common these days and is a condition where blood blocks the brain and this can cause death or paralysis.

Cholesterol and Obesity

Another common effect of high cholesterol is obesity. This can work both ways too since high cholesterol may be an offshoot of obesity. A person who gets overweight most likely has a diet that is too high in cholesterol and he or she is not participating in any form of physical exercise. He’s also probably not taking medications to bring his cholesterol levels down. Cholesterol is also known to create pockets in the body where fat can cling onto and this is why a lot of obese people have layers upon layers of excess fat.

As mentioned, these effects are not easy to identify or even notice. A person may not be aware that their arteries are thinning until it is already too late. They may not be aware that there is a tight buildup of cholesterol in their blood system until they suffer from a heart attack. At that point, it can be very difficult to fight the complication. To avoid suffering from these high cholesterol effects it is advised to regularly check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
